An Acoustically Based Contrastive Study of L1 and L2 Nasal Coda Production

چکیده

According to Ladefoged and Maddieson (1999), nasals are among the most common sounds in languages around the world. As the most common sounds, these three nasals are presumably among the easiest to produce and acquire. However, Mandarin speakers seem to have difficulty articulating English /n, ŋ/ codas. For example, Hansen’s (2001) study reveals that Mandarin speakers tend to produce English /ŋ/ as /n/ in words such as sing and song, which renders sing/song similar to sin/son. However, the confusion between English /n, ŋ/ seems not only limited to Beijing Mandarin speakers but also common among othe Chinese speakers and even native English speakers. For example, in Zee's (1981) perceptual study of nasal coda identification by native English speakers, /n, ŋ/ are often confused in the high vowel context. Thus, a more satisfactory explanation is needed to account for the alternation of English /n, ŋ/ by Mandarin speakers.

Phonetic encoding of coda voicing contrast and its interaction with information structure in L1 and L2 speech

This study examines the coda voicing effect in English on production of preceding vowel by comparing L1 and L2 speech. Particular attention is paid to how coda voicing contrast is encoded in temporal vs. spectral dimensions, how the effect interacts with information structure (with varying focus types), and how the use of information structure differs in L1 vs. L2. Both English (native) and Kor...

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*

This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...

Categorical patterns, phonetic integration and within-category variability in the recognition of spoken words in a second language

It has been shown on several occasions that speech perception in a second language (L2) is often tainted by the phonetic and phonological structures of a listener’s native language (L1). As languages vary in their phonological inventories, listeners often have to develop new phonological categories during acquisition in order to recognize words and phonemes in their L2. Recent evidence on the p...

An acoustic investigation of the production of English /s/ by L2 Thai learners

In the field of second language (L2) production, phonetic investigations of L2 fricatives are rare due to the complexity of establishing similarities and differences between L1 and L2 fricatives. The study of English /s/ production by L2 Thai learners has not received much attention, as researchers on L2 English have typically believed that learners would produce this sound with ease due to the...

Aspects of the Acquisition of Swedish Quantity by Native Speakers of English, Spanish and Estonian

The main purpose of the experiments reported here has been to test a hypothesis about the influence of L1 phonology on the acquisition of contrastive L2 phonetic categories. This hypothesis holds that an L2 contrastive category will be difficult to acquire if it is based on a phonetic feature not exploited in the L1. Twenty native speakers each of American English, Latin American Spanish and Es...
